Considering the fact that the BBC didn't accuse "China is using the port as a spy base", is a surprise to me. The BBC could have done better to report what benefits to the local farmers, and even to the neighbouring countries. It is my understanding that Peruvian farmers can now send their fresh fruits, many are exotic in nature, to the vast market in China.

US citizen living in Perú here... the US government has neglected all of Latin America, but specifically Perú, for decades. They have made horrible policy decisions and missed HUGE opportunities to foster economic development and trade with not only Perú but the entire region... but they didn’t gaf.
China obviously picked up the slack. Will China also exploit Perú in some aspects? Absolutely. But it sure is a better deal than what was there before the port.
The US needs to do some serious soul searching. The last 25 years of Clinton/Bush/Obama/Biden neo-con dynasty and now Trump...

The article says the fully automated port provides new jobs. Not true... jobs are needed to maintain automation also... these fishermen need to re-skill to learn new jobs. The ports also create indirect jobs in warehousing, truck driving, and logistics management.

Since the U.S has placed tariffs against China, it seems that China has discovered that the best course of action is to market their products, goods, and services to South America because those countries can re-sell those products back to Americans for lower tariff percentages than China must pay.

US citizen living in Perú here... the US government has neglected all of Latin America, but specifically Perú, for decades. They have made horrible policy decisions and missed HUGE opportunities to foster economic development and trade with not only Perú but the entire region... but they didn’t gaf.
China obviously picked up the slack. Will China also exploit Perú in some aspects? Absolutely. But it sure is a better deal than what was there before the port.
