Why is China Going to Dark side of the Moon?
UFO
This video has been circulating on X. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson is asked what is on the dark side of the moon and why China is exploring it . His answer, “I have no idea”.

SectorSensitive116
The dark side of the Moon is not in "permanant darkness" as he said, it is simply not visible to us on Earth.

fibronacci
I know key lost my marbles hearing him say that.

splicerslicer
he also said, "we don't know what's on the backside of the moon" which we do because we have had obxts orbit the moon. He also said, "I have no idea" why we would expect the south pole to have water which is also ridiculous because we know that water/ice is regularly found not only on Earth but also every other obxt in our solar system at the poles because that's where the sun exposure is the least. Can't believe this guy is administrator of NASA but also a former astronaut himself.

VIOLENT_WIENER_STORM
He answered “We have no idea,” to the question of why the Chinese have decided to go to the far side of the moon, not to the question of why NASA wants to visit the pole.

ghostcatzero
Yep most of it is frozen on the colder area with less amount of sun exposure

partime_prophet
It’s kinda of an expression. I’d take it easy. Take it up with Pink Floyd lol :) peace ??

dicksnpussnstuff
i can’t believe the director of NASA actually said that. i have zero faith in any of these “experts”

holmgangCore
They should call it the “far side” of the moon. From our perspective is always the far side, versus the near side.

JohnnyLovesData
Exactly. We just had an eclipse. Guess how dark the "dark side" of the moon really was ...

partime_prophet
It’s always dark from our point of view . We are in a tidal gravitational lock with the moon

OccasionallyReddit
It could be their activities cannot be observed

ghostcatzero
Dark to us

Droizo
Permanant

DormantCumcano
I was thinking the same what a grave mistake

Fair_Blood3176
It is in a sense... the Dark Side of the Moon.
It is the hubris of man that assumes what is unseen, is without light where darkness prevails.

DiscussionBeautiful
Head of NASA says the back side of the moon is always dark? Unbelievable.

The_Undermind
It's called the "Dark" side of the Moon not because It's always dark, It gets light. It's "dark" in terms of communication since it is always facing away from Earth.
Wtf are these guys talking about?

Blitzer046
There's... so much wrong about so many statements here.
NASA's Lunar Orbiter program mapped all of the moon through 1966-1967, using some of the first digital imaging. The Apollo Command Module made multiple orbits.
The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter launched in 2009 and is still operational, sending back lunar imagery.
The James Webb Space Telescope sits in the L-2 La Grange point, beyond the moon.
If this guy is head of NASA, he needs to be fired.

uknowmymethods
He has been caught out in more lies than he has hair. By the way we're missing the party of the year!!!

amarnaredux
You will notice more countries such as China, India, and Japan have made significant efforts to take a much closer look at the Moon, and use their own imaging/mapping technology.
An interesting theory is that they do not trust what information NASA shared and want to see for themselves what might truly be up there, in addition to national prestige, of course.
Whatever it might be, the US and Russia have known for quite a while.
This guy appears to be a stooge puppet and always gives me the creeps.
The Moon has quite a few anomalies, as well.

Ok-Pear1744
Sounds like NASA is trying to Rick roll china

sleepytipi
That's not a theory, absolutely any layperson can see how much Nasa scrubs info to hide it from the public. They've been caught more times than I could ever begin to count, and the most common way is by them being retarded just like Gramps here, by releasing photos initially, then scrubbing them and releasing doctored photos in place of them.

amarnaredux
I'm presenting in a fashion so those that not familiar with this history can digest it more easily.
However, yes I'm aware, just looking at the Mars photos between NASA and India is quite an eye-opener.

Sock_Ill
Who is this old man? he should not be speaking about anything related to space if this is the extent of his knowledge about the moon. He should have been gone the same day this exchange took place

Ideally a country that currently uses coal and doesn't have the infrastructure to handle nuclear radioactive material so they can be given Aneutronic material that's relatively easy and safe to handle and we can bridge the gab between developing nations and developed in terms of carbon emissions.
The issue is a large portion of the world doesn't have clean energy and is a long way economically from justifying the transition.
Too bad war is a priority.

AR_Harlock
So if China goes its good for us all, so they'll diminish emission.. nice

ctennessen
I think it would be incredible for China to become the world's superpower not because greed or forced work or whatever, but for fixing earths energy problem.

But how do we stop space nazis

Sock_Ill
You gotta go back and firstly, not hand the keys to the entire space program to nazis.

AI should be able to solve our fusion problem....surely?

m_reigl
Nah. The problem with fusion is mostly practical aspects: material science, manufacturing, control engineering, ...
AI is fancy automated statistics. It can solve all sorts of problems because many problems can be modelled as statistical optimization problems, but anything that cannot be described in such terms is just not AI-solvable.

BadAdviceBot
AI is fancy automated statistics
Right now (and we have no idea how far it's advanced behind closed doors).
And if you chop up those problems into smaller problems, AI can help. Dismissing it all out of hand is foolish.

m_reigl
Right now (and we have no idea how far it's advanced behind closed doors).
Unless you have evidence that might give a reason to believe there's an entire avenue of machine learning that is being used and kept secret, discussing this is just pointless speculation.
All currently successful approaches to AI are fancy automated statistics.
And if you chop up those problems into smaller problems, AI can help. Dismissing it all out of hand is foolish.
Scientists already do that. Like 90% of physics graduates today have some amount of background in machine learning. But it is just one of many tools, not a magic problem solving machine.

BadAdviceBot
That's fine....be surprised in a few years. It's crazy how fast the technology is advancing.

False. The moon has an abundance but is available on earth in Canada

Ebayednoob
Do you know what the number 3 stands for?
I'm willing to teach if you're willing to learn.

It’s in volcanic rock Baffin Island, bring on the downvotes you mongrels

Ebayednoob
Ah were going the super pedantic route,
Yes I guess if you want to search for peridot crystals trapped in century old volcanic rock in the arctic you might get enough Helium3 to do something interesting in...
But in the real world, it's literally easier and safer to send robots to the moon, and pick it up by the fistful and bring it back and do something productive with it.
I sometimes forget how pedantic people in some desperate attempt at validation on the internet instead of iunno, learning.

AbjectReflection
no, it's actually the dark side of the moon because it never faces the earth, it's own rotation and the rotation of it around the earth, are in a gravitational lock. So only one side of the moon faces the earth. Line of sight communication is a problem solved with simple communications satellites that you can put in lunar orbit. Easy for the Chinese to accomplish. I digress though, I think the skeleton trying to answer questions is lying and there is something to hide on the dark side of the lunar surface. What that is could be anyones guess though.

Probably that box device that looks like the Kaaba in Mecca, that intercepts souls in the reincarnation process or something like that

That cube is the shape of a 3D hexagon found on one of Saturn’s poles. The other of course is an eye. We are all in some kind of 70’s cartoon.

Doesn't this guy run NASA? Or at least is high up in the organisation? And he doesn't know it isn't dark...madness

Joseph_HTMP
I’m pretty sure he means “dark” as in not visible. As in “a radio transmission going dark”.

PDubDeluxe
He’s essentially said what you said. Playing devil’s advocate, he didn’t say there was an absence of light, to be fair. He could have implied that it’s “in dark” in a communicative sense…

TheKingChadwell
I have a lot of stupid arguments on Reddit but one that stands out is someone trying to argue with me that it’s not called the dark side of the moon. Since it’s not really dark that’s not what people call it. That it’s called that because of Pink Floyd’s album. And I’d try to explain that it means “dark” in terms of human observation and he just wasn’t having it. He was saying I was wrong, and that it’s a misnomer because people think it’s literally dark, and thus, no one actually calls it that.
The whole conversation was so annoying and I’m the one downvoted.

Glittering-Raise-826
Just read an article about it, apparently they believe there's an abundance of Helium-3 due to that part of the moon being exposed to solar winds at a higher degree.
Helium-3 can be used to power fusion reactors and just a couple of trips a year would be able to supply most of earth with "clean" power if it was used effectively. So yes, it seems like a fairly big deal if we were to make use of it.
This seems like something that government officials should be aware of/care about.

Ironically this is one of the more sane things China is doing. Which, I guess is rather strange on its own.

Tesla was killed for talking about infinite & clean energy. The rich just want to get richer, so they don't want fossil fuel usage to go away.

It’s not even the “always in the dark” comment that raises my eyebrow. It’s the “well we don’t know what’s on the backside of the moon……., so uhh they will discover that”.
Ummmmmmm. Yes, there’s dumb. But then there’s even dumber. Great pick for the job eh!! Really goes to show you that folks in these high paying big title positions in the gov did not get that big title for any reason the tax payers whom pay his (edit: or hers) salary would like to hear.
