2008 Financial Crisis 2020 Covid-19.
That rat is cursed

1996 I was born :(

96' gang!
Rat Gang rise up

[–]BobTehCat
Rats rats. We are the rats.

[–]Agleza 5
Hell yeah best year best gang. Sometimes millennials sometimes Gen Z, sometimes neither, sometimes both.
Rat Gang for life

[–]oherna
Fire rats Unite!

[–]RepugnantWaffle
I eat you :)

[–]SXLightning
If you were born before the new year date which is normally in feb you are actully the zodiac before rat

[–]SHES_A_REAL_LIVEWIRE
I came to say the same. If your birthday is in January or through half of February, you may fall within the previous year. My son’s birthday is 2/16/96, if my findings are correct he’s a pig.

[–]Agleza
Holy shit are you my mom

[–]SHES_A_REAL_LIVEWIRE
HAPPY 25th BDAY?!

[–]AtomicFreeze
I remember learning about the Chinese zodiac animals in like 4th grade and the teacher said if you were born in '94 you're a dog, and '95 you're a pig. I remember being super disappointed that I was a pig, but I realized a couple years later that since my birthday is in January I was born in the year of the dog after all.

[–]Hnro-42
We have similar birthdays then, cause i had the same exp

[–]WhichIndividual6146 1
Actually, in China, parents want a Pig baby, because they think Pig baby means good luck and fortune.

[–]GegeenCom 78
In Mongolia, there is an old saying “Only those with fortunes can see the year of rat” which means many people die before the year of rat ends.

[–]slickyslickslick 1
can see the year of rat
that would mean the year that comes BEFORE the year of the rat kills them, if those without fortunes die before they can see the year of rat.

Ummm I’m a little nervous about this time travelers knowledge

[–]LogicallyMad
It’s pretty par for the course. I’m just surprised they didn’t mention the 2044 Event.

[–]gemohandy
Well, of course it was left out - the calendar above only goes to 2043.

[–]hydrospanner
And now we know that there's a reason the calendar ends then...

[–]cwgtimkv
And the number 4 is a synonym for "death" in Chinese so 2044 would be a really unlucky year

[–]ftgbhs
Alright yes there's definitely bad stuff every year. Some of these things are definitely not at all on the same scale.

[–]FakoSizlo
Can we ask China nicely to remove the rat ? For the greater good
Edit : Even 1984 is a year of the rat . That's going to make some conspiracy nuts show up

[–]Grizzlyhorse
Rat is the first sign of the 12, it’s always super chaotic and intense. I was going around in December telling everybody— “get ready for 2020! It’s gonna be nuts!”

Leave us out of this!

Covid was actually 2019 and bad financial decisions that led to financial crisis was mostly made in 2007

[–]Dont_Think_So
Poor Rat is always cleaning up Pig's mess.

Weirdly enough I was just thinking I've had some great years as a rat (1984 born). 2008 I had broken out of my shell in college and was really involved in a lot of things that generally made me happy, and I was lucky to avoid financial reprecussions from the 2008 crisis. 2020 was also a banner year for me financially despite everything going on as I was one of the fortunate few that was already working from home and for a tech company and even got a raise, broke up out of an abusive relationship and found a really great one, etc.
The only year I don't recall is 1996. I think I was 12 at the time and honestly nothing really stands out to me about that year. Except maybe my first kiss but I dunno.
So I'm excited to see what 2032 brings provided I'm still around.

Look at this guy taking all the good luck

[–]kyleli
Rat Yang Earth = Financial collapse due to mortgages (Earth aka Land value)
Rat Yang Metal = Covid 19 pandemic and global shortage of semiprocessors alongside a trade war (metal aka semiconductors and planes)
Rat Yang Water = something bad related to water. Uh oh.

[–]WhileNotLurking
Get ready for the global warming induced floods in 2032 with the water rat.

[–]Bunnnnnnnnnny
Its not about the rat, rather the beginning of a time cycle. My great grandpa studied Fengshui and it was passed down as legend that every 60 years (10 tiangandizhi and 12 zodiac yielding 60 different combinations) beginning of the zodiac cycle (happens to be rat), the world will have turbulent events and more natural disasters. Every twelve year is small recession, every 60 years will be a huge one. 2020 is the beginning of next 60 years.

Fun Story about Fire Horses. The last fire horse was on 1966, and the amount of births that year went drastically down. This is because girls who are fire horse are said to have troubled marriages, and cause early deaths for their husbands and fathers. So, parents simply abstained for that year to avoid having a daughter. Many fire horse women lie about their age to hide their shame, the next year of the fire horse is 2026

[–]9th_Planet_Pluto
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinoe_uma
japan too, you can see their birth rate in 1966 spikes down

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinoe_uma
[–]si3rra_7
Another good point was raised in that earlier post about fire horses. Being born in that year is actually an advantage. Less peers to fight against for stuff like school/university seats.
And from what i understand the years with opposite effect like dragon or rat have more difficulty in finding schools, and the exams are harder.

[–]octoriceball
I think snakes also have that problem since people try to have dragon babies might end up having snake babies. We are the discount dragons that disappointed our mothers at conception for missing the mark.

[–]MrMacGuffyn
Discount Dragons LOL

[–]cambiumkx
In China snake can literally be referred to as “small dragon” in context of zodiacs

[–]TonyzTone
Jokes on my mom. I was born in July so she’s just an idiot who couldn’t even count.
Also, my mom isn’t Chinese.

[–]VivatRomae
How do you fuck that up? Conceive November the year before dragon year, would you not be guaranteed to be born in dragon?

[–]DaisuIV
Looking at an overall demographic generation seems to show that being part of a larger generation is more advantageous.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuXzvjBYW8A
Basically, the larger the group you belong to the more likely you are to either enact change, or be the target demographic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuXzvjBYW8A

[–]Alpha_Whiskey_Golf
Yeah but that's whole generations, we're talking about stuff that is exactly per year.

[–]LonyoOC
But he specified single years, not generations. You can be part of a large generation, but within that generation be from a single year with a smaller number of peers (and thus less competition for things that are year related, e.g. education), but get the advantage of being part of a larger overall generation.

[–]Kristalinx
This is creepy, all the men in my family died relatively (in some cases extremely) prematurely. We have a fire horse in the family...O.o

[–]TeamRedundancyTeam
Is it you? It's OK, you can be honest here, we're all friends.

[–]Kristalinx
I'm a metal sheep I swear!

[–]AnnaGreen3
That's exactly what a fire horse would say

[–]imwearingredsocks
the faint sound of a horse whinny echoes from far away

Being a yang metal dragon born in the year 2000 is literally the coolest thing about me.

[–]beantheblackpup_
Same here, too bad I have to share it with everyone else born in 2000.

[–]kynde
As a 1976 yang fire dragon, I would say the opposite. That's gotta be the hottest thing about me.

[–]frolicking_elephants
My brother was born in 2000 and I was always jealous because I knew he would be the one the prophecy was about, if there were a prophecy, and not me.

[–]periwinkle7452
Same, I've always liked the idea of a dragon, now it's a badass metallic dragon

[–]GraveDiggerDiggs
Do you know what it’s supposed to mean? I’m also a yang metal dragon.

[–]blindsniperx
The zodiac dragon is associated with "emperor" traits like powerful management skill, prosperity, and good luck.
Metal is associated with ambition, persistence, and determination.
Combined it foretells that you may be a person who is very organized with a stable life, and you're so good at it in fact that your positive vibes spread to benefit others you interact with.
The dragon is always associated with yang. It basically represents extroverted qualities.

[–]Serpenta4
Well, that’s just completely wrong for me, but sounds cool

[–]nuocmam
Because astrology, East or West, is more complex and extensive than that. It's not just the year.

[–]raspberry-kisses
ambition, persistence, determination good management and organization skills positive vibes
now where the hell is my stable life and good luck???

雄心、毅力、决心有了,管理组织能力有了,积极正面的气息我也有了;

[–]Va11us
Guys my whole world has fallen apart. I thought this whole time I was a Water Monkey, but according to that wiki the start date is Feb 4th, and I'm Feb 2. This whole time Ive been a metal sheep. Im devastated

[–]Captive_Starlight
STAY OUT OF SCOTLAND!!!!

[–]WolfTitan99
Aw that sucks. I have a Feb 15th Birthday and I was ecstatic when I found out that I was actually a Wood Tiger and not a Rabbit LMAO
Literally on the last day of the Lunar Year for 1999

Water pig, water pig, does whatever a piggy can. Look out, here comes the water pig!

Spider-man, Spider-man, Does whatever a spider can”)

[–][dexed]
Hey fellow water pig!

[–]hospitable_peppers
I’m a...wood pig

[–]StripedNinja
I’m fire pig and i was singing the same exact thing but with fire when I read this

--------------------------------------
[–]UnhappyBelial
Yang metal horse, here. Try and stop me!!...I have no idea what it means...but it sounds badass!

[–]AbstractBettaFish
Same. I feel like Metal Horse sounds like a Metal Gear code name

[–]plan4change
Heyo! BRASS monkey would like a word!!

[–]UnhappyBelial
The funky monkey!! It sounds like a good name for a metal song.

[–]OG_bullet 2
My yang metal dragon beats your horse so easy.

Chinese new year is correct.
It's like the Arabic numerals. We use them in most countries, they are still called Arabic. And they have not even an Arabic origin as they come from India.

[–]spicypenis
Wrong equivalence, and very western centric way of thinking. Chinese New Year is not correct, or at the very least not inclusive.
Source: I’m Vietnamese, we celebrate lunar new year.

[–]Fruity_Pineapple
How is that a wrong equivalence ? That's the same thing.

[–]spicypenis
It’s the same thing in the sense that western people decided to call it that one thing and it sticks even though it’s not accurate. Arabic numbers were invented by the Indians.
There are several different New Years derived from the Chinese New Year, the Vietnamese and the Koreans ones are among them. Even though they have the same origins, they all have evolved into different forms over time and thus should be recognized as different things and be treated differently. I assure you no one in Vietnam calls it Chinese New Year. Now the Vietnamese American might call it Chinese New Year because that’s what they were taught lunar new year means in English. Ask them what they call it in Vietnamese and get back to me.
Now are you gonna keep denying my people’s tradition and whitesplain my own tradition to me?

[–]okaycontroller
Maybe varies by place and person? My partner’s family is Vietnamese also, and they call it Chinese New Year.

[–]Throwaway_Consoles
My coworker is Vietnamese and literally sent an email out today wishing all of us a happy Chinese New Year. I asked if she was Chinese because I thought she was Vietnamese and she replied, “Even though I’m Vietnamese it’s still the Chinese New Year”
I don’t know why people feel the need to interject and say, “Actually, other countries other than China celebrate the new year. It’s not just the Chinese New Year.”
Like that’s cool and I appreciate the heads up, but we’re talking about the Chinese New Year.

--------------------------------------
[–]addyorable

[–]internetlad
This is a secret chinese plot to get redditors to reveal their real age.

[–]futurebioteacher
TIL there's an element aspect to the zodiac. How in all my years of chinese restaurant patronage and paper placemat reading did I learn my animal but there was never any mention of elements?

[–]BevansDesign
Just curious, what percentage of people in China still take this stuff seriously? I'm assuming it's like western astrology, where most people realize it's nonsense except the people who don't understand what confirmation bias is.

Scrolls to see when I was born
Earth Dragon Yang
Googles: Famous Earth Dragons
“Martin Luther King, Jon Lennon, Che Guevara, Bruce Lee”
I knew it. All done here.
