Let this sink in—1 billion people could suffer #LongCovid in the next 3 years, and a growing public health problem. Long COVID may already affect up to 7% of the U.S. population, according to the @USGAO, and likely to increase. #CovidIsNotOver

I’m convinced this is why China is so hard on lockdowns now. It’s not about the initial infection, it’s about a very bleak future.

That's exactly my thinking as well. The harsh lockdowns are a long term strategy to keep their economy functioning.

Yes, millions will die long after their first getting COVID. Expect 5-10% of populations dead in 5 years after "it is mild, everyone will get it eventually" lifting of preventions and forcing everyone to "return to normal." China understands the long game like no one else.
The US should be at the high end of that range with current underlying health issues in the population. Other Western countries with similar "let it rip" strategies will likely be in the mid to lower range of that. Still 5% dead is a lot of dead people.

In the same way that post polio syndrome affected military exemptions (when there was still a draft), long covid may crush the military dreams of many young people

Not so sure about that, as they have been doing these measures since the very beginning of it before there was really any data on long covid.

Yep. They saw the problems SARS1 survivors had and correctly assumed the same thing would happen with SARS2.

It could be both but I agree they must be looking at this long term, seen what’s happening in the West and thought nah!

And while initial infection may kill you, long covid is a slow, grueling often painful, demoralizing depressing slow death.

would agree we would be much better off if we had the same resolve as the Chinese in terms of locking down to save lives. Two weeks and this could be over!

They fear mass debility from LC which could cripple their economy and strain their resources if they let it rip across 1.4 billion people. The implications are enormous.
