Basically you are better off getting on a long road trip with an engineer. Not with a lawyer, or a reporter, or a politician. Questionable to get on a long road trip with a banker.
If your car breaks down on the trip, the engineer is going to fix it. The lawyer will find someone to blame. The reporter will lie like no tomorrow. The politician will ask for money to make you settle for being stuck forever, while saying “I’m so great”. The banker will loan you money (assuming you already have money/asset) to keep you alive, but he’s not interested in helping you unstuck, because he’s got this opportunity right now, to make money off you.
This virus has a maximum 2–week incubation time. 2 weeks! That’s all! Literally if everyone stays home for 2 weeks, you’d know who has it and who doesn’t, without even using any test! Then you keep the infected in isolation, and everybody else can go about do their normal things. Good grief I can’t believe 2 years later, with all the tests and treatment and drugs and vaccines people are still stuck. China, for the entire year, had 2 people die of Covid. 2! And having her economy growing 8%! And doing the most trade in the world!
Countries on a road trip need to have a 9:1 STEM vs. non-STEM ratio to keep moving, imho. The STEM guy can improve the reality. All these other guys, all they know is how to conduct their particular flavor of psych warfare on the driver. Good grief!

To be fair, China has long prepared itself unintentionally for pandemics through its amazing infrastructure development and love for technological innovation. This is one key to China's success in dealing with covid that many ignore.
For example, the Chinese willingly stayed indoors during the lockdown because they know that their needs will still be met. There would be no shortage of basic supplies because of their infrastructures and the efficiency of their government. They also did not need to go out because they have innovated and improved online shopping years ago. They can have fresh meat and vegetables delivered to them in only a few hours after ordering. There simply was no need to go out.
Of course, all of these innovations are achieved due to the efficiency of their government and that's one thing that they should be mighty proud of. I bet China can even survive a zombie apocalypse.

My theory is that there are two general profession types for people: the world of words and the world of numbers.
Most people prefer the world of words, especially if they live in the US and the west.
Lawyers are not good at numbers except when it comes to counting your money.
Reporters are not good at numbers, period.
Politicians in the US are not good at numbers except when it comes to raising money for their next campaign. They don’t need to be good with other numbers because it is all other peoples’ money.
Engineers are good at numbers because they need to quantify things.
Data is mostly numbers. If it is not a number, it gets resolved to a number if it lives on a computer or on the Internet.
So all data are numbers.
That means that data is getting more important, and words are getting less important.
Guess which world is going to win in the end? Guess which world is getting irrelevant?

A small correction to your answer: This virus has more than “a maximum 2-week incubation time”. In fact, even during the relatively early part of the pandemic (early 2020), there were known cases of incubation times that lasted for up to a month, though they comprised only a small minority of all cases. By now, we have been hearing about more known cases with incubation times that have lasted 3 or 4 weeks, which is probably why recent COVID quarantine times for some international arrivals to China have been 28 days or at least 21 days.

Even though your answer has some validity, in the world of human beings it’s called “nit picking”.
In the scheme of things China showed how it’s done and continues to do so.

Your reply not only failed to correctly note that my answer has not just “some validity” but all of the validity for the point that it was intended to make and did make, but also failed to observe the fact that I had already made clear that it was a “small correction” from the start. In the world of human beings it’s called “lack of reading comprehension” and “being triggered”. The rest of your response is irrelevant to mine.

The big reason was that we went through this all with SARS in 2003. After SARS, people looked at the mistakes that were made, and started preparing for the next epidemic. You had some near misses like MERS and bird flu, but it was only a matter of time before a pandemic happened.
Part of the reason everything worked is that you had a group of scientist-politicians that were trusted by both the politicians and the scientists. Also China established a very clear chain of command, and it turns out that the mass mobilization while terrible for running an economy turns out to be great for dealing with an epidemic.
One thing about Western response is that people talked about a false choice between economic growth and epidemic control. China made the decision to absolutely wreck the economy for one quarter.
One problem with Western response is that over the last few decades, there has been too much power moving from things like public health to the markets.
One thing that the West did an excellent job at was dealing with the economic fallout from COVID. Western economies were on the verge of collapse in March 2020, and the central banks and legislatures did a very good job at responding to the economic fallout, and one wishes that the CDC were able to respond to the crisis as well as the Federal Reserve did.
However, this shows that people have been spending too much money on investment bankers and too little money on public health.
One final thing is that Western countries were a bit arrogant and absolutely obsessed with making China look bad. There have been a lot of cases over the last two years when Western nations have looked down on China, talked about how bad and incompetent China was, and then a few weeks later found themselves in a big mess. One problem with Trump was that Trump was so obsessed with making him look good and making China look bad that this ate into having to deal with the pandemic.

Trump is especially disappointing, especially since he was an authoritarian.
It’s well known that at this one particular moment in history. democracy isn’t the best way to fight the pandemic.
So what really should have been done, is for Trump to go all fire and fury on this virus.
Trump shut the government down before. He can shut the USA down.
Trump’s supporters worship him as god. Their god can tell them to shoot lockdown breakers and those MAGAts will.
Trump can get the National Guard to build hospitals within weeks and they will.
Trump can put people up in his hotels and get it done.
Trump could do everything China did. And then drag the court cases out typical politician style. Smear every Democrat voicing out about his attacks on democracy as pro-Virus. Watch the left tear the rest of the Democrats apart because Trump is for once following the science. ‘I can’t believe I am agreeing with Donald Trump!’
Trump, with more tools than a regular US president, failed.
Joseph Wang
Pretty much. The thing is that Trump is a master salesman. He can get people to get shots, wear masks, and follow quarantine.
Things could have easily gone very differently. If you had someone like Xi in Washington and someone like Trump in Beijing, the world would be a completely different place.
Gloucera Wingardium
Very different, and in such a world we would be right to fear China. In such a China we’d have 700 million people trying to escape and 700 million ultranationalists. Both would cause chaos for the rest of the world.

That's why the democratic system will ruin China. The Chinese logically and instinctively knows this. All this sales talk of Freedom of Speech and Human Rights left the Chinese unmoved. Thank god for that

1) government competence and 2) the level of trust citizens have in the government though the two factors are obviously highly correlated. Government enacts good and easy to understand control measures and the people trust the government enough to listen.

It's proven that the Chinese style democracy and CCP value their own people's lives more than anything else.
The US style democratic nonsensical regime doesn't even value their own people's lives and health, and treat their own million of citizens’ lives as garbages, saying nothing of protecting human rights.
China has only 1 death of covid-19 since May last year 2020. The model of the world to protect people's lives, uphold the human rights and freedom, keep good sustainable GDP growths and maintain a healthy and prosperous society.
China is the model for the world to follow.
The US should learn from China on how to protect their own citizens' lives , treat their own citizens as human beings, especially the minorities first, then talk about the human rights, democracy, freedom etc. later on.
Without human lives, where are the human rights?
Without people's health, where are the people's freedom?
Zhuzi
First, China had been through the debacle of SARS when she was caught unprepared in 2003. She learned from the painful experience, and vowed never again to let a virus destroy people’s lives.
Second, Chinese leaders are a cohesive group. They can put aside personal differences and work together for the good of the nation.
Third, the Chinese government firmly trusted scientific experts on ways to deal with the pandemic.
Fourth, Chinese government was decisive. To protect lives, she listened to scientific advice and determined, at lightning speed, to shut down an entire city of 11 million people regardless of economic and other costs. Life is of supreme importance to Chinese leaders. The cost included facing unkind accusations from the West that she violated human rights. The shutting down of Wuhan City was a feat never happened to mankind before.
Fifth, Chinese people is a cohesive lot. When mobilised and ordered, people stayed at home. They wore masks whenever they need to leave the house to stock up daily necessities for the household.
Sixth, thousands of medical personnel from across the country, risking personal safety, rushed to Wuhan, the epicentre of the pandemic during the early days, to help the city's hospitals handle the thousands of cases.
Seventh, thousands of construction personnel raced against time to construct the 1000-bed Huoshenshan Infectious Disease Hospital 火神山新型冠状病毒感染肺炎专科医院 in a mere 10 days. A world’s first!
Eighth, Chinese TCM doctors worked along-side their western medical colleagues in treating COVID-19 patients. TCM herbal treatments had been proven effective.
Nineth, Chinese leaders did not shy away from admitting shortcomings in the handling of the pandemic. Even with their trying their personal and collective best, errors and misjudgments still occured. They documented the whole episode and learned from it, vowinig to do better the next time.
Tenth, when China was first under seige by the coronavirus in December 2019, she was almost alone in the fight. The western world was watching the development with glee, hoping that would destroy China’s growth, or at least, retard it. Fortunately, decades of facing hostilies and denials of assistance and cooperation from the West had strengthed China’s fortitude and resilience. When one searches the web today, he or she will still find hundreds of western media news and video clips mocking China with all kinds of accusastions and suspicious conspiracy theories.
Today, in Noverber 2021, while some parts of the world are still inundated by the coronavirus, China stands alone.
Has China vindicated herself sufficiently?
David Bivans
Im not a fan of communism at all, but they did the right thing and followed the advice of the scientists.
They have shown that science works and stupidity does not.

It seemed elementary, humankind has done the same with all contagious diseases many times in 1,000s of years. You isolate the sick away from the healthy. You lock yourself at home so you don’t get in contact with the sick people.
What was puzzling was how come other countries didn’t know that? All regions of the world had similar experiences in the past.

The only innovative part of China’s handling of the pandemic was to forcefully quarantine their citizens by welding their doors shut, and I don’t believe any other country was inspired to follow suit.

Or, you know, they also frozen any loan payments by the quarantine citizens.
Or, you know, they also mass tested the entire potentially infected region, down to the last individual.
Or, you know, they immediate informed all the individual in a community if even a single case showed up near their place.
Or, you know, they have check points and big data record of public movement, which means the moment someone is infected, they can track down who was in contact with that person over the past few days.
“Not capable and doesn’t have care enough” is quite different from “I don’t believe any other country was inspired to follow suit”.

Even though your answer has some validity, in the world of human beings it’s called “nit picking”.
In the scheme of things China showed how it’s done and continues to do so.
David Urmaster

Im not a fan of communism at all, but they did the right thing and followed the advice of the scientists.
They have shown that science works and stupidity does not.

It seemed elementary, humankind has done the same with all contagious diseases many times in 1,000s of years. You isolate the sick away from the healthy. You lock yourself at home so you don’t get in contact with the sick people.
What was puzzling was how come other countries didn’t know that? All regions of the world had similar experiences in the past.
Tobias Jonch

Yes, China has only done its part, and most countries have made a mess of the most basic ones.
