Its just expected. US seemed complacent (esp in space tech, semiconductors & EVs) and now overtaken by China. In 100yrs time, maybe its the same with China and someone will come overtake China, if China took its foot off the pedal. Look 2 yrs ago, none of the Chinese unis were in top 100. Now many unis in China are in top 20. That is quick. Moreover US unis (like Australia) are not funded by federal govt anymore but by itself. So thi is the flaw in the system. Maybe US shld decide what it wants best?! For the world, for US politicians or for its own people? Going by what they're doing, US is only looking after the politicians pocket, thats all. Definitely not the people cos so many people are living on streets. Not for the world cos they create a world of un-balance or wars & chaos.
