Many movie stars, rock singers and company CEOs already do. The US appears to be the land of plenty for those that already have plenty. For the rest of us ……. Not so much.

I’m British, but have also lived in the Netherlands, Spain and Australia. I have also visited the US extensively (upwards of 30 trips, primarily to California, but also to the Capital region, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Florida and Utah. I have also been offered the option to work in the US, but declined. As such I think I’m pretty well educated on the differences.
Given my experience, and what I also know of the US from the media etc, I can say that I would never consider emigrating to the US. My reasons are as follows:
Healthcare. I like “socialist” healthcare, provided free at the point of delivery from cradle to grave. Whilst I have rarely needed to use the NHS in the U.K. I’m mid-forties now, and not getting any younger and I’m getting to the point in life where healthcare is massively important. I wouldn’t choose to live in a country with as expensive and messed-up a healthcare system as the US under any circumstances.
Employment. I’m far from being a raging socialist, however the lack of job security in many US states makes me not want to work in America. The UK’s employment protections are not crazy compared to countries like France - however i do think they are fair and balanced for both the employer and the employee.
Guns. As a farmers son, I grew up around guns, and have a shotgun certificate (although I don’t own a gun myself), so I’m clearly not anti gun on principle. However, i don’t want to live in a country where the right to bear arms is considered more important than the lives of school children. Maybe that makes me strange, but it’s a personal choice. The U.K. has only ever experienced 5 mass shootings - and firearms legislation has been increasingly tightened as a result, to the extent that no-one in the U.K. seriously worries about getting shot - indeed, the vast majority of people in the U.K. won’t ever even see a gun in real life, let use or be be affected by one.
Rights and personal freedoms. The US often claims to be the land of the free, however I’ve seen very little evidence of that. Right now we’re seeing abortion rights being threatened, we’re seeing gay and trans rights threatened - not to mention the ongoing repression of African Americans just for being black. The only people who seem to be “free” are gun-totting white cis male religious nut-jobs.
Politics. I’m far from being a socialist - by British standards I’m considered quite right wing - yet the American Right is so far to the right on economic and social issues that I would never want to risk being governed by a Republican.
Police. This is more of an indicator than a reason in itself - however I do not want to live in a country where the police have such an attitude problem. I have only had a couple of minor encounters with US law enforcement, however none of them left me feeling warm. In the U.K., the police know that they are public servants, and policing is based on consent; they aren’t armed for the most part, and you can happily walk up to them to ask directions, the time or anything else. When they talk to people, they are respectful and try hard not to intimidate. The US, on the other hand often comes across as being more like a police state.
All these points are a huge part of what makes up “living standards” - as such, for me the US can never have the same living standards as the U.K., because it doesn’t have these basic things in place.

I’m a U.S. citizen who doesn’t see this country as being the most free, the bravest, the most developed, the best of everything, etc. I would say, however, it’s the most uncivilized of the developed world.
And speaking of health care: The Declaration of Independence (which wasn’t exactly a genius move on the part of our founders) promises “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
Great. But it’s not possible to have any of those things, if you go bankrupt to pay for health care — or, as an alternative, just go without care when you need it. And if bad can be worse, here it is: Nobody seems to care that this happens.
And job security? I’m not sure when that went out of existence, we did nothing, and here we are. And if bad can be worse, here it is: Nobody seems to care about that, either.
And the reprehensible right wing party? The GOP has become the POC: party of christianity. Its adherents have a rarefied version of christianity.
Nobody even knows what separation of church and state means — and, again, nobody seems to care.
The POC has aligned itself with low info, low IQ hate groups, because they need support from that hideously large sector. The voters in this sector will vote to hurt themselves, if they’re pretty sure the the POC will heap more hurt on those whom the haters hate.
To double down on support from their mangy base, the POC is busily passing voter suppression laws, and scheming to pass even more, to make sure people unlikely to support them won’t be able to vote.
Meanwhile, talking heads for major corporations are decrying such measures, supposedly calling for open and free elections — while they fund the voter suppression laws, via contributions.
And nobody seems care about, or even be aware of, any of this.
The U.S. socioeconomicpolitical system is a disaster, and anyone less than a multimillionaire or multibillionaire is screwed. I definitely don’t blame anyone who wants to avoid this country.

I would NEVER live in the USA. I thought about it 30 years ago. I’m Australian born so could get a green card. Looking at how the Americans lives it seemed super for me to buy a small ranch with my hubby and use income from horse boarders, fishermen, (it had a huge lake), and hunting as there was a wooded area with loads of wildlife.
I would set up a camping area for the hunters and fishermen but my main would be the horse livery and training as I am a horse whisperer.
I was SO glad I decided against it, (based on the medical horrors of the USA), as my hubby had a stroke that left him severly disabled BEFORE he retired. He was in hospital from mid August 2013 till the end of October 2013 when he finally came home. The NHS paid to adapt our home for his disabilities, (we paid about 40%). He has carers 4 times a day and has done for the last 8 years. We pay a token amount for them.
If I have to put him into care then sadly I will lose half of the value of my home as the Government will take his half of our house to fund his care home. That means my children will have to sell the house to pay the bills. That saddens me as my hubby and I worked hard all our lives to leave things for our children.

From what I have heard from friends in aged care, the government takes a lump sum as a bond for care. I believe the family gets part of that back when the patient dies.

According to the Residential Care Home my MIL is currently residing in Melbourne, the proceeds from the sale of her home will be held as a bond which the organisation will invest. The interest will pay her “rent” and her government pension will pay for her personal care, food, recreation etc. When she passes away, the entire bond will be returned to her estate without paying capital gains.

Dai Excellent comment and observations about American life. In addition to your comment about “standards of living”, I think you should add “quality of life” to it. We uate virtually everything in America by how much money a person has or earns or how powerful they might be. But quality of life is often overlooked here and I believe that overall, it is likely better in the UK and EU.
Dai Bach
That's very true - I’ve kind of conflated quality of life and living standards, when they’re very different things.

USA is very big with very different gun laws. Most places you visited (except Utah maybe) I don’t believe you saw anyone with a gun.

A number of my colleagues, in many locations, had guns themselves. One colleague (from Florida) even refused to travel to the U.K. because he wasn’t able to bring his gun with him (that was pre 9/11, though). I actually had less exposure to guns in Utah than anywhere else. I was generally based in Provo, and the very devote Mormons I worked with didn’t seem very keen on guns at all.
As for not seeing people with guns - if nothing else, all police are armed to the teeth. Seeing an armed policeman is unusual in the UK - In England and Wales we only have 5000 armed police - out of a total 125,000 - and they’re generally only at airports, government buildings etc.

The question is factually incorrect. I recently had cause to compare earning $100k in USA or the equivalent Sterling in UK. The facts are, in USA, New York City, your tax liability and other deductibles (not health care) will mean a take home income of around $72k.
Compare that to a UK employee earning an equivalent Sterling wage. This person will earn £76,923 ($100k) and after tax and deductibles will take home a little over £56,000 which is equivalent to $75,700 if my mental maths is right!
The key difference here tho is health care. The Brit gets to keep his £56,000 because his National insurance contribution which includes health insurance is already deducted. Mr US however, has to shell out a further sum from his income to pay health insurance.
My estimate is that for the same income band, the US worker is 15-20% worse off than the Brit.

More Brits immigrate to American then Americans immigrate to Britain. Twenty times more Brits immigrate to the USA per capita. Those are facts.

I’m American and I am in the upper middle class by American standards and would leave in a heartbeat if I could. We don’t have higher living standards or wages and I make almost $45/hr. No healthcare, (I have good insurance, still pay a lot) guns everywhere for no sane reason, infrastructure falling apart, higher cost of living, longer work week, I could go on but why bother I doubt you have traveled anywhere and saw how much happier the rest of the world is. Wake up .

I for one would NEVER! Even consider it, why would I? I earn a decent wage, have a comfortable lifestyle and I know that should I ever fall on hard times I will be taken care of at a decent standard.
In the past I have fallen on hard times, suffered from health issues but have never been worried about losing my home due to medical bills.
I now have a decent job and a supportive network and I am more than happy to pay my taxes once again and help those that need the support just as they once helped me.

I live in Britain and our standard of living is good (despite me earning less than the average salary). Our healthcare system is amazing, I don't have any health insurance yet if I get sick I would be treated in hospital until I'm well again. (And have done so). There are no guns!
Our woodlands and villages are beautiful, our country roads peaceful and some areas of the country the scenery is breath-taking. Our food and products are of good quality, there aren't any real 'slums' (or ghettos) like there are in some parts of America. The roads and towns are interesting as they have be built up and evolved over hundreds of years with a rich and fascinating history. Our education system is literally first class. Our legal system not corrupt and the police are friendly - even to criminals.
This is one of the best countries in the world to live. If I HAD to move elsewhere I'd choose Australia or Canada. But certainly not the US

I am upper middle class in the US. I work in Engineering and since I am a Principal, share holder, with my firm, I make really good money. I think I will end up at over $200,000 this year. However, the medical insurance that we pay, $700 a month for each employee, plus the $300 a month the employee pays, with a $3000 deductible, are sickening. The insurance does nothing but deny, deny, deny. One has to continually fight to get things covered. I keep hearing folks in the US say, under socialize medical people wait….well, so have I, after paying in $12,000 a year (700 from the company and 300 from the employee) and don't forget the employee pays the $3000 deductible. I waited over 24 months fighting with the insurance company until I had sinus surgery, did not matter that I was in pain…nope. Broke my hand, they denied surgery for so long, 4 months, that when I finally got my hand rebuilt, I now only have 50% use. The orthopedic doctor said, had he been able to get in there right away, I would have regained 100% use. In the US it is about profit for the insurance industry, not the health of our people. I have family in the UK and they have never waited for as long as I have for anything, not once.
Amazing that we do have socialize medical called Medicare for those over 65, like my wife. She also has not had to wait, not once. While I was waiting, fighting with my insurance, for my hand, her hip started hurting. She went to the Doctor, they said her hip was done, a little over a week later she had a new hip. While I waited, she was diagnosed, had surgery and completely recovered within the 4 months I waited…..
So, if I knew what I know now, 20/30 years ago, I most definitely would leave the US. At 60, it is hard to do and family is here. Having traveled all over the world, I know that we are a rich backwards, behind everyone else, 3rd would county. I've seen with my own eyes how others live with higher standards of living.
In the US, the law abiding citizen has become the enemy of the police, they will shoot to kill first and figure it out later. You can go bankrupt because of a single illness, even with excellent insurance, the political system has gotten dangerous, especially the right and their fascist leaning ways. We own 3 cars, a large diesel pickup to tow our large 5th wheel RV, a Jeep because we live in the mountains and an electric car which I commute to work in. I live in a country where people, especially folks on the right, will try to run you off the road (Happened), block charging stations (Happened), berate you in a parking lot (Happened several times) simply because I drive a electric car
The religious extremist Christians, not all, but a pretty hard core group has gained a voice in the US, are no better than the Taliban in the way they want to control others… truly scary.
So, yes, I grew up loving my country, but over the last 4 years or so, starting with Trump, I have become completely disillusioned with my country and feel trapped here.
Why would anyone want to move from their first world country, to our 3rd world country where the entire system is designed to maximize profit, make the rich richer, and crush everyone else?
Dean Carr
I feel so sorry for the rational citizens of your failing state. The lunatics are taking over the asylum. Until more people like you make their voices heard, there is no way to reverse the process. The first step to solving any problem is to admit it exists, but most Americans seem to be in denial

Lauree Burdett

Dai Bach

It might become a viable option?
