I'm a Japanese living in Tokyo, but for some reason, when I went to Osaka or Seoul, people thought I was a local and asked me for directions(I tried hard to explain to an old lady that I can't speak Korean^^;).
Also, once in Sea-Tac airport, a Chinese-American staff at a souvenir shop told me she thought I was Chinese(She found out I was Japanese when I spoke to her, haha!).
Maybe it's because I have the appearance of the south Osaka area. It is said that lots of people from Baekje(百済), one of the ancient Korean Kingdoms, migrated to that area a long long time ago, and I look like my grandfather who was born there. Anyway, no matter where I go, I find it easy to fit in with the place, it's safe in a way and I think it's interesting.

Chinese is extreme case of analog type of language where you literally have to 'draw' it. It's very artistic and beautiful yet inefficient. Korean is another extreme case and completely opposite of Chinese language where its structure is very digital, one of very few 'two dimentional' language in the world where you can construct a letter or a word like building a Lego with different parts. It's very efficient and logical.

My friend was born in the Guangdong province and moved to Australia as teen. He later became a musician working with a Japanese label and moved to Japan. He first lived in Osaka in a house that was Japanese only. I was supposed to stay with him, but he had completely forgot to ask, if I could. It wasn't possible. He looked so Japanese, that they didn't think, he could have been anything else.
And when we asked for directions, they talked to him in regular Japanese. When we were out of the store, I asked him, if he understood, what they said. Well, I had understood more than him (I've been learning Japanese longer than him at that time)

The truth is that most of the time you can’t know for sure. A lot of “appearance” that is used to make these decisions is actually based on make-up, hair and clothing style. I’m of Chinese descent, but often mistaken for Japanese or Korean people who are Japanese or Korean, and most recently, mistaken for hapa by someone from China.

I think this was touched on a bit, but i think the subtle differences even when we all grow up in America tends to keep Chinese, Japanese and Koreans from marrying each other. On a completely different subject, Korean writing system was made to represent the sound they make when you read them. It's one of the easiest writing system to learn as each "letter" is comprised of two or more to make one sound. ㅇ+ ㅏ = 아, making a sound like "ah"

Where I'm from it very common for east asian to date each other. Extremely common, just got back from chinese and korean wedding not long ago.

As someone who's traveled a bit, and seen people from all over...
While I do think there exists some general stereotypes for people (i.e. Koreans/Filipinos like to sing), they are vastly over done, and still don't fully capture just how different people are, even within the same family.
I do think some cultures bring out certain sides of people that other cultures do not. For example, I feel Mexicans are outgoing, and I feel more social around them. I think Koreans are outgoing but insular (don't let non-Koreans into their clique), Chinese people are outgoing and fairly open to others, and the Japanese a bit quieter.
But no matter how much there is a culture of something, humans base characteristics won't change. Quiet people will always be quiet people, even if they are in a very loud country. They might become louder, but it would take a lot for them to be a loud person.
There even was a study of an AI program who tried to classify where an Asian person was from. The program couldn't determine much from base looks, but found overwhelming evidence for clothing and attire. I think this alone shows just how bad humans are at stereotyping, especially when it comes to large populations.
Which I think is a bigger problem in western countries, where many people don't really get to see the full experience of being around a large enough group of Asians to really see how that plays out. This of course leads to oddly specific racial stereotyping. At least for Asian men (before the last five years), you were either the nerd, the kung-fu master, or the "small-penis" jokster (a la Ken Jeong style).

I definitely see how the “good looking” label on Korean people spread. my mom comes from a region in China with tons of ethnically Korean people (Chinese Koreans, speaking Korean and stuff, but have been residing within Chinese borders). My mom says they have big, round face and small eyes, monolids, which is not considered attractive in the traditional East Asian beauty standard. But also my mom says they also have this reputation of having clear and “lighter” skin. But now Kpop is everywhere and people start to appreciate the “Korean faces” — it’s delicate and young-looking. Also people seem to move on from the traditional notion of who is better looking.
CocaineMinor
Korean as always be called good looking in Asia since K-pop hit Asia during the 2000s
But for the western world idk but it's new to them i guess lol.
Rosie Y
@CocaineMinor yeah, my mom's stereotypes date back to the 1970s at least. I think as kpop/drama wave started, people also started to gain the new stereotype of plastic surgery and obsession with looks/appearances. I think this mixed stereotype spread across East and SE Asian much earlier than how it starts to spread in the West and the globe.

Funny you mention the Korean language is almost like drawing faces. I was taught that the design of the letters is based on how you hold your mouth and tongue.

Besides the physical features of East Asians, the cultures have a lot in common the only way that I'll be able to differentiate most of the time is the languages

Korean Baekjae dynasty moved to Japan, obviously current Japanese DNA is a mix of several roots including Korean. Even Koreans are mix of several roots including Eurasia, Mongols, etc
Unko Power
some Korean have a 'classic' Korean face that you can spot right away, usually angular, sharp hard angles. Like an underdrawing when drawing a face portrait. A lot of Japanese women do have buck teeth, like you almost want to offer them a carrot. And Japanese do not have long legs, usually short. Japan uses too many English loanwords, they should stick more to Japanese. It's a cliche in Japan (one that seems accurate) that some of the best and most famous singers are actually Korean blood. Also Matsuda Yusaku one of Japan's top movie idols was part Korean.
The Red Bar-Cross
All the stereotypes about Chinese in the Western world pertain to southern Chinese, mostly the Cantonese.
Northeasterners are entirely different, and more like Koreans. Northwesterners are like Russians and Central Asian: direct, blunt, and aggressive.
Southwesterners are like Thai, subdued, friendly and passive.

@The Red Bar-Cross....Everyone that knows China should know that China is not a homogenous country. The country has multiple ethnic groups and diverse phenotypes depending on the region they come from. Many Chinese citizens are also of Korean ethnic background especially close to the North Korean border.

@lyhthegreat Lol i wrote should know if you dont know that the ignorance on their part. Funny you sa people think many belief Asia is this one big monolith country. Because if you ask Asians they think the same of Africa but complain if people think the same of Asia ? Bit ironic dont you think
Darryl T
I thought I could after meeting many in college but nope, I still get it wrong when meeting new Asians. For east Asians, it's the moment they speak the English language when I can tell if they are Japanese, Chinese, Korean, or Vietnamese. As for Asian Americans born in America/2nd+ gen, I can only tell if I hang out with them and at some point their accent will slip up somewhere in the in their English language lol.

Well they ain't that different from mainland China lol
Their culture is literally the same as Chinese Han culture.

@CocaineMinor I think Koreans are completely different from Japanese and Chinese. Historically, they are a people who have maintained their independence under Chinese oppression. What the Chinese misunderstand is that they don't know how much Koreans have tried to externalize Chinese culture and protect their identity. For example, look at han-gul, they are the first countries to artificially invent and distribute their own character. It is also different from Japan, which still relies on Chinese characters
Eric K. Sohn
@elekow its irony because the time when Korea was in tight grasp of Chinese influence was when Han Chinese were not ruling...

Koreans are actually culturally quite different to nomadic mongolians and dongbei people of the northeast. There are a lot of rules and rituals to be followed, and the language itself strictly follows hierarchy-based honorifics. These are all absent in Mongolia and Mainland China. Most Koreans aren't even that fiery, but more passive (or passive-aggressive). There is a whole 锚点culture of nunchi, which better elaborates on this. A lot of the stereotypes being talked about here (about Koreans) are quite out-dated, or mis-guided.
sunwoo lee
I disagree with Atti ‘s opinion. His opinions confuse others. Of course, it is true that there are differences, but he makes the mistake of explaining the differences in too much detail. I want to ask him Why are more than 10% of modern Mongolians fluent in Korean language today? we dont even have a border connected. they are easy to learn the language because Mongolians share a similar mentality with Koreans.

Double eyelids among Chinese are due to the southern orientation of Chinese compared with Koreans and Mongolians. Southern Chinese have nearly 0 Caucasoid component(actually even less than Koreans) but the occurrence of double eyelids among Southern Chinese is even higher than among Northwestern Chinese Who actually have a very small amount of Caucasoid admixture.
Southeast Asians have more double eyelids than even Southern Chinese. Genetically Chinese, even Northern Chinese, are between Northeastern Asians and Southeastern Asians.

When it comes to foreign borrow words, those you called "college level" words, China borrow heavily from Japan since Japan opened up its border to western influence long before China. Back in the days, when people in China want to travel to a foreign country to learn, Japan was one of the top country to go. Sun Yat-sen spent times in Japan when he was organizing revolutions in China. One example of Japan's influence on Chinese words is that the Chinese words of "communism" is a borrowed word from Japan. In fact, in China's official name PRC, R is for republic, and modern Chinese word for republic is a world orginated in China, but Japan took it to represent the translation of "republic". Later on China borrowed this idea from Japan.

One distinguishing feature most people miss is that Koreans tend to have a lot of chin, Park Chanho is the prime example. This gives an overall appearance of a flatter face. There is obviously a lot of overlap but there are certain facial types that are typically Korean and there are other types that are certainly not Korean(ie too southern or too Caucasoid etc.) but can be Chinese or Japanese(too Ainu, too much hair, too Caucasoid etc). Most(but not all) Koreans can pass for a Chinese or a Japanese, but the reverse is not true. There are certain types among Chinese or Japanese who cannot pass for a Korean. In this sense Koreans are phenotypically more homogenous(ie Koreans tend to look the same. and this is not due to plastic surgery. Non-entertainer Korean men do not have plastic surgery that often).
One distinguishing feature of Japanese is that their women have bow legs. It is pretty serious. Koreans too are slightly more bow legged than Chinese and Chinese are more bow legged than Southeast Asians.

as a foreigner who went to their countries, i’ll say
koreans are more closed into their owm clicks ( hard to make friends in korea)
china easiest to make friends with locals as they are open to talking to foreigners in public / meeting , even strangers..
now the obvious one … chinese are loud AF in china hahah mostly older ones to be fair, with the IDGAF smoking / spitting in public
japan are shy, but manners is the Best best from all asia , with taiwan being second place.
i lived in china for 3 years
lived in taiwan for 4 years
so i think that makes me someone who can speak on it from
a general perspective.
also traveled to korea/ japan few times while living in mainland china

Besides the physical features of East Asians, the cultures have a lot in common the only way that I'll be able to differentiate most of the time is the languages

some Korean have a 'classic' Korean face that you can spot right away, usually angular, sharp hard angles.
