Parliamentary systems usually have a coalition of parties forming the ruling government. In this case Mi Hazank (“My Our Homeland”, an extreme far right party) picked up seven seats. Since they’re part of the coalition they can generally be counted on to vote with Fidesz, but not all the time. So, if a bill is voted on by party line, it’s 135 Fidesz votes + 7 Mi Hazank votes + whoever that last vote is.
down_up__left_right
We'll see what happens now that the election is over.
"We will remember this victory until the end of our lives because we had to fight against a huge amount of opponents," Orban said, citing a number of his political enemies including the Hungarian left, "bureaucrats" in Brussels, the international media, "and the Ukrainian president too -- we never had so many opponents at the same time."
Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Monday after his party won a fourth term in office and said he hoped to further build ties, the Kremlin said.
"The head of the Russian state expressed confidence that, despite the difficult international situation, the further development of bilateral ties of partnership fully meets the interests of the peoples of Russia and Hungary," the Kremlin said in a statement.

I've seen a number of pictures of Putin T-shirts and Z logos for sale in Serbia, and a lot of articles noting that significant percentages of Serbians continue to insist that Serbians were not involved in any of the massacres and war crimes. Nationalist deliberate misinformation will keep generations convinced that the bombings were unjustified.

Any nation lacking freedom of media is at risk of becoming a Russian puppet state just like Belarus.
onlyuros
You think your media is free? Only western media tells the truth? Youre a joke
Taavi00
There is no such thing as "Western media". There is independent media and state-controlled media. The vast majority of "Western" countries do not have government control over media outlets. This doesn't mean there is one single narrative in all Western media outlets. Which in turn means that you get a much more accurate picture following the media in Estonia, Germany or the US than Russia or China.
onlyuros
I don’t agree, the “more accurate picture” coming from US is in my opinion the most distorted one. The fact its not owned per say by the state does not mean its not controlled by it in one way or another.
Taavi00
Judging from you're post history you come from Serbia, a very friendly state to Russia. So your viewpoint isn't exactly neutral in this matter.
Of course media is controlled by someone, it's a business after all, a business run by people. But different media outlets often have different coverage and they target different audiences. The coverage of the war in Ukraine by Fox News is vastly different than that of the CNN. There is no such thing as a unified Western viewpoint.
onlyuros
Different in what way? Does Fox say Russia is right? Nato is getting too close and arming countries next to Russia?
I believe they are just two sides of the same coin, Fox existing just to be laughed at when a different narrative is presented.
Taavi00
All NATO members voluntarily joined the unx because they decided to do so as sovereign countries. Since Russia is the biggest threat to the indpendence of countries in Eastern Europe, it makes perfect sense for NATO to defend its members by providing some assistance in builing defensive capabilities. NATO itself poses no direct threat to the territorial integrity of Russia or to its people. There is no country in NATO that would want to invade the shithole called Russia. The only real threat to Russia's integrity is perhaps China.
When it comes to Ukraine, there are only facts here. Ukraine is a sovereign country which Russia invaded. There is no legal case in international law where Russia's action could be considered justified. BTW, when Ukraine gave nuclear weapons to Russia in early 90s it did so with the promise of territorial integrity. Russia obviously doesn't give a shit about such promises.
Therefore, any independent media outlet would reach the same conclusion.
Adrian-Lucian
The bombings weren't justified, they were war crimes like the Serbian and Albanian ones.
Prosthemadera
This is seriously oversimplifying the situation.
But then, oversimplifying is part of the reason why people killed each other, isn't it?
jpbus1
Yep. NATO bombed Serbia for two months straight, destroyed the chinese embassy in Belgrade and even dropped depleted uranium on Kosovo. Can't fight war crimes by comitting more war crimes
Darda_FTW
They safed 2 million peoples lifes. As such, they were clearly justified.
realnrh
So attacking a country that is attempting a genocide is not justified? Serbia was murdering people and refused to stop. A sadly large number of modern day Serbs refuse to admit that their country was murdering people in the first place.
Adrian-Lucian
Destroying the military of a country attempting to commit such a crime is, in my personal opinion, morally legitimate. Killing 500 to perhaps 1200 civilians in inconclusive bombardements of dubious purpose isn't.

Serbia trying to straddle both sides. See how that works out for them.
And fuck Hungary, they can can piss off out of the EU.

It's a tough position they're in. Politically, economically, and militarily, Europe is the only logical option for alignment.
Culturally, religiously, and ethnically, Russia will be intertwined for quite a while. So what part of the human psyche wins? The pragmatic and logical side, or the emotional side that has been built up over hundreds of years?
tagehring
Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, and Austria should all be neutral in the first map. On the second I would also suggest adding a light shade of blue to differentiate between NATO members and countries like Finland and Sweden who exercise with them and whose militaries are up to NATO standards.
anschelsc
Yeah, if "communist but non aligned" is its own category then "capitalist but non aligned" should be as well

Not having Russia near you is a healthy thing
I'm Israeli and oddly enough I can confirm. The main reason we didn't send military aid to Ukraine yet is that Russia has HUGE forces on our own backyard and we're the bottom of every Russian provoking against the Americans in the region. Yet, pardon my language, Syria is so heavily fucked that having the Russians there is somehow still better than most realistic alternatives. Sigh.
Oh, and glad to have you on this side of the curtain now. Both you and the Poles. You peeps are cool

Yup. Russia tried to extend its influence in many places. Hope that you guys can get a break in the region. You deserve a peaceful life there. Israel, in my opinion, with all the problems that there are, it is one of the few good examples from the middle east.

Sr_Carlos_Danger
Why tho? There isn't any major political difference between the two this time. We all have freedom of speech but only some of the time, we all get to vote in elections that we think don't really matter. Your life wouldn't change, just some rich guy you've never met would be buying and selling oil futures with rubles instead of dollars. Who cares?

You cannot see the advantages in a liberal system that allows the free flow of information to its citizens, and allows them to benefit from their creations that arise from it? You are missing a lot.
Sr_Carlos_Danger
I don't see how liberal democratic Russia is a threat to that. They don't do any more press censorship than Poland does, i.e., they do it a lot. But there's no alternative political system on the table right now! "Theoretically parliamentary democracies where the election system is actual captured by a small ultra-nationalist clique" describes all the players here Boo hoo, Poland/Russia is just like North Carolina now
darkenthedoorway
I dont understand what you mean when you refer to russia as liberal and democratic, because it is not.
Sr_Carlos_Danger
How so? They have elections, they have more freedom of speech and press than many of their neighbors- what standard are you using, and how many NATO countries meet the same standard?

darkenthedoorway
Russia has zero press freedom or individual freedom of speech, or assembly. I dont think you know what you are talking about.
Sr_Carlos_Danger
That's obviously not true tho, since there are opposition parties, there are news outlets that endorse them, there are huge, well-planned street protests against the war happening this very second. Alexei Navalny stole half a million dollars trying to turn himself into a "political prisoner," and they still wouldn't lock him up until he violated his parole in live TV! The level of censorship is exactly comparable to the Polish government forbidding individuals from saying that Auschwitz was in Poland. Going off quantitative things the number of arrested protesters per capita or number of dissident media outlets shuttered, instead of just our feelings, we find that America was far MORE repressive of the George Floyd protests than Russia has been of anything during Putin's time in office. Does this make them a free and open society? Of course not. Does it make sense to describe them as more open and tolerant than the West, or the West more open and tolerant than them? Also no. Both are liberal, capitalist societies with an oligarchy, some press censorship, and a dominant-party political system that has no love for dissidents, but understands that treating too harshly is bad PR. Any suggestion that there's an ideological basis for the current system is naked chauvinism. And, as you'd expect, we are seeing roughly the same amount of chauvinism from both sides- "denazification," remember?
darkenthedoorway

Serbia and Hungary seem headed in that direction though, judging from their elections.

Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, and Austria should all be neutral in the first map. On the second I would also suggest adding a light shade of blue to differentiate between NATO members and countries like Finland and Sweden who exercise with them and whose militaries are up to NATO standards.
anschelsc
Yeah, if "communist but non aligned" is its own category then "capitalist but non aligned" should be as well

As a Pole I’m really glad to be on the other side of the curtain this time around, although having the curtain itself on our border isn’t ideal...
Theghistorian
Same here, for a Romanian. Being on the good side of the curtain is great. Hope we can keep it like this.
I really wish that Ukraine will win the war and get herself aligned with the west because we will no longer have Russia as our neighbor. Not having Russia near you is a healthy thing
RoyalSeraph
Not having Russia near you is a healthy thing
I'm Israeli and oddly enough I can confirm. The main reason we didn't send military aid to Ukraine yet is that Russia has HUGE forces on our own backyard and we're the bottom of every Russian provoking against the Americans in the region. Yet, pardon my language, Syria is so heavily fucked that having the Russians there is somehow still better than most realistic alternatives. Sigh.
Oh, and glad to have you on this side of the curtain now. Both you and the Poles. You peeps are cool
Theghistorian
Yup. Russia tried to extend its influence in many places. Hope that you guys can get a break in the region. You deserve a peaceful life there. Israel, in my opinion, with all the problems that there are, it is one of the few good examples from the middle east.

having the curtain itself on our border isn’t ideal...
Finland: "First time?"
Jokes aside, glad to have you and others on the better side of the curtain. Hopefully Belarus manages to escape too.

Belarus is in the process of integrating into Russia proper. You can essentially treat Belarus as Russia at this point

Lukashenka's position isn't as secure as Putin's. If this war goes very badly for Russia, we might see an uprising in Belarus.

Given your membership in NATO and the display the Russian army has put on over the past month, you really only have to worry about nukes. And if Russia goes that route, being the first to go isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Well, curtains do tend to be put on poles.

Don't worry NATO has your back. There's a tonne of NATO forces specifically in Poland

Well geostrategically you are on the western side of the curtain, but politically Poland cold also be on the eastern side, together with Hungary I guess.
JustYeeHaa
There’s still a huge gap between us and Hungary even if it seems like our government would love to go the same path

Like, remember those stories of Soviets coming West and being shocked to the point of disbelief at the openness and choice? Yeah, Russian expats don't say that stuff anymore: https://twitter.com/leonidragozin/status/1510612753706332160?t=iGdsdP3LxPjama7Sro1W2g&s=09
darkenthedoorway
Its all the same to you, suit yourself. I robustly disagree.
