The UK is the first country in the world to invent and use the subway. But now, tourists in China have been able to travel on the subway at a speed of 160 kilometers per hour. Driven by a sense of crisis, Britain realized that its old railway facilities could no longer meet the commuting needs of locals.They began planning to upgrade and improve the rail network.But do you believe China will give up on Britain’s $63.1 billion rail upgrade project?

@BWong1234

You failed to mention another reason why China turned down the project. The British has learned or blindly orientated to breaking agreement taught by the US.

@acchan53

It is too risky to take up mega projects in UK because they can cancel the projects anytime due to political reasons.

@sweechen9762

The Chinese are pragmatic business people. They will do business with almost anyone. Except those they don't trust.

@tanisharbaap

As a Bangladeshi we are forever indebted to China for constructing the Padma Bridge. It was done for less than $4B, but it already is contributing more than $6B towards Bangladesh' GDP per year. It is a dream come true for millions of people of southern Bangladesh. No debt trap, no strings attached. And no other countries wanted to do this project since it was such a difficult and complex project.

@user-yc5px4yu4r

The British had set too many unfriendly expectations and conditions for the Chinese HS railiway companies, even before final agreement.Those were clear signs of trouble which can be avoided by rejecting it.

@mijmijrm

a large scale project requires a solid foundation .. ie. integrity in it's political/economic/financial environment.  This is where UK fails.  Any UK attempt at a large scale engineering project is doomed to fail because of political/economic/financial incompetence/shenanigans.

@nageshmr5209

China has the greatest high speed railway network in the world

@Jodoe243

Knowing how UK operates, it is a sound idea to reject any projects with UK.
UK can ask Japan, India or America for help.

@davidwoon6402

Sunak thought the offer is too tempting for China to refuse. Yet.., China is wise enough not to take the bait. The whole project looks "fishy"!

@theoracle9873

That is the way to go China! Cheers from ASEAN!

@tanisharbaap

It is not wise to bypass China for partnership in infrastructure projects. Ask Indonesia vs. India for their HS railway projects. By the time India develops the first 100 miles of its Bombay-Ahmedabad project, Indonesia will likely complete its HS line all the way to Surabaya from Jakarta - 500 miles or so.

@richardlee3502

And who could blame them for rejecting Britain when it does nothing but disparage China

@Chinook-tj9bv

Let the Brits build their own high speed rail project. It will cost more (due to project cost overruns) and be behind schedule... a huge win for UK!

@KingKongWorld

Nice move.
I am delighted that Chinese people didn't get this contract. The fact is that they rejected the UK project.
China must focus in priority on helping poor countries.

They experienced with Italy, Lithuania and other countries in Europe.
And they were rolled in flour. China has learn their lesson well.
Never again to be bullied....

@billyesomann

Too many political risks, The Nuclear power station in Wales and Huawei were good examples, both contracts proceeded and were cancelled. Let the old and hypercritical colonial power taste the bitter pill

@Alwayswilling

I'm assuming China knows how badly Britain's  economy is doing and isn't going to risk having London refuse to pay for some pathetic reason.

The one and the only policy when dealing with the UK

@KC_88631

The Chinese rejected the project as they knew that halfway through the UK will eventually sanction the Chinese under the disguise of national security

@thinkandsoar

Not only is it non-profitable for the Chinese (or anyone) to build such infrastructure in the UK, China cannot ignore the political risk that any newly elected government of the UK could revisit and reverse a decision made by the previous administration. A nation that can change its commitment on a whim is not fit to be an economic partner. Just look at the nuclear plant project, the globlal strategic partnership between the UK and China (the so-called "golden era" laughably lasted only 2-3 years, and was terminated no less by the SAME political party in power) , or more importantly, the Brexit.

It takes years or decades of cooperation between a developing country and China before China would agree to transfer core technology to its partner. The UK could switch its decision many times already in that time span. China is wise to stay away.

@karchi12

Owing to the uncertainty  and unreliability of the British government’s policy towards China now and the future ,the rejection of building fast railway plan in Britain, imposed by China is a thoughtful and wise action.

@daffyduck4195

The Chinese were irritated by a few UK actions in the South China Seas that were forewarned to them, like signing a military troops pact with Japan, sending nuke subs to Australia, and sending a nuke carrier (the HMS Queen Elizabeth) to flex muscles off the coast of China in July of 2021.

@allenyu771

The British government listened to the opinions of the United States and dismantled Huawei's communication equipment. Today, the UK is still using 3G networks. This is the tragedy of the Anglo-Saxon nation.

@franktongzi1430

As a chinese who experienced many countries,I think the main reason is unstable promises from the local gov.It is 100% possibly stopped by one politician now or in the future.This is not a short-term project.

@MnemonicCarrier

The probably realized the British wouldn't be able to pay for it

@markfan7648

Just for reader's information:

In 1963  the British Borneo colonies were transferred to the Federation of Malaya, renamed Malaysia.

Amongst the string of promises made for the transfer was the federal project to build the Borneo trunk road of about 2000 km from Kuching Sarawak to Kota Kinabalu Sabah. This became the Pan Borneo Highway and has taken 57 years and they still have not finished the project.

In the meantime, people running road construction companies became billionaires and millionaires because they got the contracts from their backers in power.

@baskjhdgkasgd

During the Qing Dynasty in China, the ministers in the palace said to the Empress Dowager Cixi: "Foreigners (or British) have come to help us build the railway." It is a pity that Queen Elizabeth is no longer here, otherwise Charles said to her: "The Chinese have come to help us build the railway. Yeah." What an interesting scene that would be.

@fasteddie328

A likely scenario could be: China builds the HS railway, UK accuses China steal their technologies and refuses to pay.   Hahah, no way ! Glad China didn't fall for it..

@BudyL135

From Indonesia. Many US power and media in Indonesia also making bad statement about China Indonesia HSR. And sadly many people here have taken influence of western. But I am glad the HSR is finish and it help a lot of us to transport from our capital Jakarta to one of Indonesia large city Bandung. We also support the continue project toward another large city Jakarta Bandung and Surabaya. Happy to form business with China. And one of the reason maybe western donot know why we donot take or cooporate the project with Japan is. Japan donot want to transfer or teach us any of the HSR developement. But with China cooperate they want to teach us about the HSR and China give us more cheap price. I also observe about Africa and I laugh so loudly. They told Africa to stop cooperate with China for their infrastructure. But they begging China to build Western. And if some western say. You donot benefit or profit from HSR. I think you are wrong. HSR is expensive and you may not profit in short term. But in long term, travelling, business, partnership, and etc between city in one country is more easy and efficient. That's why I think nowadays a modern and developed country can be seen from their infrastructure. That's all I wanted to say. Peace from Indonesia.

@raycomeau6866

The French have high speed trains, as does the Italians and the Spanish. But the English and the Americans seem unable to do so.

@3066jc

We will never have a modern high speed railway, not within 30 or 50 years unless a drastic change in policy and people's attitude towards modern development and obviously if and when we have the money! Bloody unlikely now!

@daffyduck4195

It is mystifying that the HS2, which began in 2009 and spans only 225km, is projected to be completed by 2029-2033, mean while the Chinese will have completed 40,000km of HSR in the same timeframe.  I hear the UK enlisted the French and Japanese on the project.  The French will add fragrance and class to the trains and the Japanese will ensure the highest speed, but the UK villagers are still not giving in to the idea.

@spencer7404

Don't do business with those who like to double-cross others, such as the UK and India.

@ronaldphoong

My thoughts run that the UK has a failing economy. Just as we see in the country that brought in Fiat money, their debts just continue to rise. What ponders me is the inability to recognize that Fiat money is unrealized wealth, until the debt is paid. You also see that these  countries finance military industries whereby their funds come from the country itself through debts which are paid by tax payers. Such debts borrowing have no returns in the future. That equates to future bankruptcy. Given the current standing since WW2,  debt has surpassed the ability to repay. US is one country that is always standing at a tipping point. In the last 30 years, US, UK have not invested in their own country's growth, inflation has rocket high and well, my guess is the debt default will eventually take place, just as we see in the US that the government would be shutdown and the frequent call to raise its debt ceiling. when a country function in this manner, thinking that destroying other countries will not have consequences, I ponder to think why not. Refugees, no wealth generation activities can only lead to self destruction. These are my thoughts that run through when someone shares a higher cost to spend for growth. If China takes up the project, politicians will definitely use the debt trap analogy to blame China. So, it's not how cheap China can give. The question should be if the country has sustainable policies to support their country.

@user-jk8co9qi6f

I'm curious why United Kingdom won't let Japan build high-speed rail. Japan listens to America very much. Everything is negotiable, price or technology

@danstenis660

Building is a headache in Britain because of the cumbersome laws and people's obstructions.  It is better to work in other countries first, and the UK last.  If British citizens really want a railway to be built, then the people would clear all obstacles.  Only then is it worth the time and avoiding the headaches to build in the UK.

The  Chinese built a high speed train between 2 major cities in just a year ,the issue in europe also seem to be we see them still sticking to rail and ties vs a high speed system being elevated and it being maglev or much higher technology's  then we see in europe so until europe is willing to tear out the old systems totally, you won't see much in the way of high speed trains

In the UK we've been hearing for decades that billions of pounds investments in the nuclear power but the project did not materialise. Same for the travel infrastructure billions of pounds spent over the decades but travel sector is worser than some third world countries, broken up road surfaces, potholes and repair issues. Sometimes little bit of bad weather creates a chaos in the travel sector.

Now the energy crisis will create another decade of slow growth and UK could remain in recession.  It seems like heading for the stone age.
