UK on the verge of ‘biggest rail strike in modern history’

(Danger signals ahead for operations in Scotland, says the RMT.)

Trades unx RMT is warning for what it calls the biggest strike in modern British history. The unx plans to ballot its members in the railway sector, asking to back strike action. The ballot, which opens on 26 April and runs until 24 May, could result in labour being withdrawn from fifteen passenger train operating companies in England and Wales, as well as over 40,000 railway workers from Network Rail, the national infrastructure agency.

The RMT unx says Network Rail intends to cut at least 2,500 safety-critical maintenance jobs as part of a 2 billion GBP reduction in spending on the network. Meanwhile, staff of train operating companies (TOC) have been subject to pay freezes, threats to jobs and attacks on their terms and conditions.

Effect on freight

While the fifteen passenger operators targeted range from South Western Railway to LNER, the operations of freight carriers are potentially compromised if safety critical operational staff withdraw their labour from Network Rail posts. Tim Shoveller, regional director for Network Rail, defended the soon to be disbanded agency’s position. “”We cannot keep relying on government handouts, and so we must work together with train operators and our trade unxs to save millions of pounds and deliver a more efficient railway”, he told a BBC interview.

Separate action is also proposed in Scotland, where the majority of passenger operations have just been brought back into public management after the local government exercised a break clause in its franchise contract with Dutch company Abelio.

Removing safety critical jobs

Echoing the strikes of the 1970s, and even further back into the crippling strikes in the 1920s that culminated in the General Strike of 1926, unx leaders have said that if members vote “yes” in the ballot, and breach the “anti-trade unx” legal threshold for turnout, then a national railway strike could begin as early as June.

Fears of worsening industrial relations have been voiced already this year, with trades unx sources making dire warning of a summer of discontent on the network. “Railway workers have had to contend with pay freezes, the prospect of losing their jobs and repeated attacks on their terms and conditions”, said RMT general secretary Mick Lynch. “Removing 2,500 safety critical jobs from Network Rail will spell disaster for the public, make accidents more likely and will increase the possibility of trains flying off the tracks. Train operating companies have praised our members for being key workers during the pandemic but have refused to keep staff pay in line with inflation and soaring living costs.”

Disquiet north of the border

In Scotland the railway has been effectively renationalised since the beginning of the month. The RMT says it has evidence that the Scottish government’s Transport Scotland department has directly requested for Network Rail to cut the funding for railway operations, maintenance, and renewals across Scotland.

“An FOI [Freedom of Information] request passed to RMT shows Transport Scotland requested that Network Rail reduce its baseline budget by 65 million GBP in both 2022/23 and 2023/24”, says a statement from the unx. “This new evidence is in direct contradiction to official responses from the Scottish Government when asked previously about cuts to renewals and maintenance funding.” Because of impending local authority elections in Scotland, restrictions on public comment mean Transport Scotland and other government agencies are unable to comment until after 5 May.

Absolutely shocking

“This new evidence is absolutely shocking and shows the Scottish Government playing fast and loose with passenger and railway worker safety”, said Lynch at the RMT. ”It was only a few weeks ago that the full report into the tragic and avoidable rail disaster at Carmont was published, which highlighted the systemic and structural failures in safety caused by fragmentation of maintenance and renewals.

“These cuts have the potential to make things worse and I am renewing our calls on the Scottish and UK Government’s to put an immediate halt to these planned cuts and wider plans by Network Rail to cut thousands of safety critical maintenance jobs and instead guarantee that the necessary investment in the rail infrastructure and modern communication systems to keep the railways safe will take place.”

The force of reasoned argument

Lynch went on to say that thousands of railway workers have seen their living standards “plummet” and have run out of patience. “The way for trade unxs to effectively take on the cost-of-living crisis is to stand up for their members at work and take industrial action when employers are not moved by the force of reasoned argument.
A national rail strike will bring the country to a standstill, but our members livelihoods and passenger safety are our priorities.”

I've worked for London Underground for 22 years. I've never, ever known it this bad. Morale is non existent, cuts everywhere, everything is either falling apart or not working. It's wholly down to the government and Boris trying to "win" what ever game he tried whilst mayor. The only people that suffer are the customers. Exactly the same on national rail. Fuck the tories.

ZenAndTheArtOfTC
Remove London Underground and replace with so many other institutions. Universities are in such a state at the moment.
Not to draw away from your experiences, I am just in awe at the current situation world wide.

i-am-a-passenger
How come universities are in a mess? I would imagine that they are drowning in cash these days.

ZenAndTheArtOfTC
Low pay, long hours and short term contracts. The drop off in foreign students had also had a major impact, despite fees being around 9k home students don't cover their own costs and universities need students paying the higher fees.
Coupled with a contraction in money for research and even the best universities in the country and suddenly finding themselves in a tough situation.
Another impact has been Brexit, UK funding hasn't been increased to make up for the lost funding so now an already reduced pot is being chased by more researchers.

Wait until you hear about the NHS

-Not-Tomorrow-
The NHS too. I couldn't even get a pillow for a patient the other day. Rang 6 different wards and they were all short too. Like we're down to bare bones on a lot of stuff we need and use every day. Staff are fucked, and leaving in droves. I can't afford my bills on just my wage anymore so I can't actually afford to live on what I'm being paid. Thank god I'm not single. If it was just me I'd be done.
It's frowned upon if we strike though. So either we fight for what we need and end up vilified in the media. Or we shut up and take it and let the NHS slowly crumble.

Anyone know why it seems that rail workers always strike whereas people stuck in min wage customer service roles never do this?
I spoke with people when I worked at a bank and they couldn’t give a fuck they were getting paid pennies. They wouldn’t do anything about it.

Kijamon
unxs and public sector workers having better unxs.

No-Imagination-OG
Ah right. We had a unx but striking was never even mentioned. It was always they would ask for a pay rise and get shot down, that would be the end of it.

Zeionlsnm
Two things, firstly train unxs have a monopoly on rail travel in many parts of the country, so they can cause an immense amount of misery, suffering and economic losses if they don't get what they want. Compare this to for instance minimum wage workers at mcdonalds, if they go on strike, people will just go elsewhere, so their power is diminished.
Secondly train unxs usually deal with one big company, so its easy to go on strike against that company. Compare it with unxs for fast food workers who have hundreds of different companies some of who have better or worse conditions, so the unx can't easily justify going on strike against all the companies at once, again weakening their power.

Solidus27
How the fuck is the rail system in bad shape when we pay so much for it?
If the rail workers are unhappy, then where exactly does all that money go?

thereidenator
I know right, rail travel is prohibitively costly in this country, it's crazy. It should not be cheaper for me to drive to London than to get a train

TheeAlligatorr
That money doesn’t go into the rail. It goes to the Train Operating Companies that operate the trains. And every year they sue Network Rail for more money. All those companies aren’t even based in the UK. Yes you can be angry about this. It’s encouraged. Fuck the Tories

MrSpindles
Well, the ticket prices rose by a record amount again at the start of the year (as they do every year, always a new record rise) so you'd think that they would be paying the staff more from that.
But of course, that's not how it really works. Much like the gas companies increasing the standing charge even though it is the unit cost that has risen and it doesn't cost them any more to provide the service. This is just putting up prices because they can, as high as they can get away with and purely for the purpose of extracting more profits for the shareholders.
The system we live under is not fit for purpose.

sirbobgarabaldy
Privatisation of the railways failed horribly but not one political party will talk about it in any serious way The political classes are the worst we've ever had in the UK. They tend to come from well middle and upper class backgrounds, attend good schools, universities and then go straight into politics. They are devoid of any social acumen and are all looking to the next position. British MPs get a large payment when they lose their seats.... Anyone else outside of football/CEO level get that deal...?? You were so bad the population got rid of you - heres a last bucket of cash before you go, to ease your pain...

mrwho995
I'd encourage people read what the strikes are about before passing judgement. £2bn in cuts are in the works, including 2,500 lost jobs related to safety work. Think about how abysmal rail service is already with the near-guaranteed delays and frequent cancellations. Now imagine that being even worse. Of those that are left, their living standards are set to plummet with continued pay freezes and worsening contracts. And no, not every person who works in rail is the 'train driver paid 50 grand to push a button' you always hear about when this comes up.
We should direct our anger at the abysmal companies that have run our rail services into the ground, and our complicit government who have let them do it. Not the workers.

Good news, it will send a clear message to the gov. Get inflation under control or else! The rise of the unxs is necessary with this gov.

If inflation is a genuine concern then the idiots at RMT should not have been so stupid to support brexit

paulusmagintieMerseyside
Inflation is an issue caused by banks most of the time like in 2008, the US is likely going crash on Monday with the S&P 500 goes below 4000.
Brexit and the war in Russia (Inflation shot up before this even happened ffs) are being used as scapegoats for the real reason though they are not helping matters.

CaptainStealthalot
Inflation is an issue caused by fossil fuels most of the time, which allows a small number of actors (including banks) to hold the rest of us hostage

paulusmagintieMerseyside
Who told you that horse shit? So you think getting rid of fossial fuels will stop reccessions and inflation?
No the banks take stupid risks in the stock market, they give loans out to dodgy actors and people who can't afford the loans, when they start struggling the FeD or BoE start pumping money into the system and the increase in money increases inflation and this has been happening for years but acclerated with Covid.
If you are pointing at fuel prices as being the reason for inflation or energy prices, those are a mix of reasons but also caused by inflation rising at the end of last year, so its a symptom not the reason for the inflation.

ken-doh
Do you really believe the government can control inflation?
The war in Russia is driving up gas and oil prices. Ukraine is a massive exporter of food. So it's driving up agriculture prices.
This Inflation is not really something we can control. Its an international issue, there is war in Europe.
The only tools the government has to control inflation is to restrict the flow of money usually via a raise in interest rates / taxation.
Sadly this is the new reality until the war is settled, it may yet get worse. Striking and unxs are not going to do anything to solve the global problem of inflation.

halobolola
I wish the unxs of my sector would call for strikes. While I was a grad I watched 4 years of talks with the government happen each with a triumphant ≈1.5% pay increase at the end of it. Why would I join that?
Threaten a strike, and I’m in.

Train tickets are already too expensive. It’ll be ticket prices going up or tax payer funded. I don’t suppose the execs will take a pay cut

Navy_hotdogs
All this mention of regular workers taking a cut but nothing about the execs how strange. This might be a an uneducated idea but why can’t it just be government owned and made to just break even rather than bring in a profit?

So happy to have paid 200£ for a return ticket a few weeks ago and to see that all that money definitely doesn’t go to workers by the looks of it! What a scam!

I work in the Rail industry. I couldn’t tell you just how big this…until I read this headlines and yeah. That probably sums it up best

Anony_mouse202
Given how shit rail service (and other public transport) is becoming even without strikes, now is probably a good time to ditch public transport and get a car.

Mick Lynch is a cretin. He wants all sorts of jobs retained, at high salary, even though rail is losing over £400m/month. Network rail want £2bn in savings (which still doesn't cover the losses). And he hasn't realised that the game of going on strike and holding commuters to ransom just won't work any more. Nearly everyone is set up for remote work and will work from home on those days.

pdbaggett
You do know the jobs they want retained are maintenance staff yeah? Which they plan on getting rid of by cutting maintenance in half essentially.
Do you think it's a good idea to cut half your ground staff and the ability to maintain the network correctly?

As someone who worked in the railways I say good.

More power to the people!

GekkosGhost
Sweet. I'll just work from home that day then instead.
Rail strike. It's 2022 not 2019. The power has gone away. I'm sorry, but it really has. In time this will come to be seen as a massive strategic error.

pdbaggett
You know the rail serves a lot more than passengers, Tesco presumably don't like when they cant get a shipment loaded by freight...
