I think it’s a signal to us: officials feel tired about the voice to limit the video game.
In China, the criticise about video games has lasted for at least 15 years. 15 years ago, WOW and WOW players were the target, and then, LOL and LOL players, PUBG and PUBG players had became the target. Video games have become the enemy of some parents, seems without video games their children would become great.
But many people know that those parents want to hide something. The core problem about their children were the lack or mistakes of the education from parents. A man said on Zhihu: “If the life was fantastic enough, who wanted to enjoy themselves in video games?” Another man said, “You can spend all your time on Mahjong, you can enjoy your night in the pub, and your children should spend all their times to study, uh?”

In the new announcement about that, a special sentence was used, which should not be here but should be in the answer the petition. The new limit is a answer to the voice. Now, if parents want to say something about that, they should see that if the 3 hours on the online game (the main type of video games in China mainland) is enough to make their nonexistent education to their children “wasted” or not. And, because many problems will be solved because of the new limit, many adult players support the new limit.

To the Chinese the most important thing they can do for their children is to offer them the best education they can and this has helped China innumerable times in the past and today and very probably in the future as well.
It probably will not be that hard to enforce either as parents would support the move and the fact that the edict came from the leaders of their country would add more credibility to the request.

There are many reasons, but I could only mention some:
there are many children addicted to games → it creates unhealthy children as they are lacking of physical exercises.
many children are playing games too much, and have less time to study or social interactions
online games often sell online stuffs (such as online weapons, coins, etc). And many children use their money to buy these things. Some times, because of games they force their parents to buy them expensive stuffs online. Some children steal their parents’ e-wallet to pay their games, and their parents got trapped in debts. There are many cases of this in China and other part of the world.

Because this is what happens in the West where students under 18 spend lots of time playing computer games (a lot more than 3 hours) and less time studying. Mean while there is are high school graduates here in the US who are illiterate and are not qualified to find any job of substance.
In China the Government makes the rules regarding child wellbeing and promotion. Once upon a time (I am speaking for the US) parents used to promote their own child’s wellbeing while the government was told to mind their business but at least then children could read upon graduation. It’s ironic how things play out isn’t it?

Chinese parents have been complaining about their kids spending too much time on online gaming for years; they think it is a distraction from their studies;
Tencent is the largest online gaming publisher in the world, and is worth more than Facebook. Parents hate Tencent for this reason. (Unlike Americans, Chinese hate the super-rich and they hate monopolies.)
The Chinese government won points with parents with this ban; they love it and are cheering for the Chinese government.

4. Parents who do not consider that the restrictions are needed, can loan their own ID to their underage children and bypass the rules. However thereafter they can't complain, balls are in their own hands. Government is happy, kids are happy, gaming companies are also happy.

Believe me, offline games are nowhere as addictive as online games where gamers indulge in some sort of interactive excitement. Also, there’s the problem of kiddos spending more than they should on tools in-game. (According to Chinese parents, kids should not spend anything on games other than maybe the games itself.)
Launching a private server online to play games isn’t that big of a deal. Since most games in Chinese market are ones that enable gamers to buy in-game tools to win, which is a big business, you don’t get that many good games that don’t spend money.
I applaud the Chinese government’s decision to crack down on online games. On one hand I think online games are poisonous to teenagers. On another hand I think this move will push games developers to shift focus on offline games that take much more time and effort to develop.

When I was still in school (late 1990s / early 2000s), my parents complained that I used to watch too many cartoons from Cartoon Network. They claimed that this was a plot by Americans to rot the brains of young Indians by giving them cartoons to watch instead of letting them study.
Did this make it less likely that I would spend time watching cartoons and more time studying? I’ll leave it to the reader to decide.

I hated that limit when I was a kid: I would play for 3 hours, calculate the exact time that the limit will reset, and immediately come back online at that exact time, then rinse and repeat. It doesn't bother me now because I could barely play for 3 hours straight anymore.

When my son was young I put restrictions on the websites that he could access. One website that he could access was Facebook because his schoolmates were using it.
My son quickly figured out that he could look up a website on Facebook and usually there was a lix from Facebook to that website thereby bypassing my restriction.
I wonder how the Chinese government and the gaming apps will enforce this restriction and how long will it take for the kids to find a way around it.

Chinese game sites require facial recognition before the player can play. Kids under 12 can’t get in because the authorization server knows their age.
This is another example of where the Chinese are ahead of the US when it comes to tech applications.
